LeBron James Opts In for Historic 23rd NBA Season with Lakers
LeBron James will return to the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2025-26 season, making NBA history as the first player ever to compete in a 23rd season.
The 40-year-old superstar, who remains the league’s all-time leading scorer, exercised his $52.6 million player option, a move confirmed by his agent Rich Paul on Sunday.
James’ decision extends a career that began in 2003 with the Cleveland Cavaliers and has included championship runs with the Miami Heat, a triumphant return to Cleveland, and a pivotal role in the Lakers’ 2020 NBA title.
Now entering his eighth season in Los Angeles, LeBron has already surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record, reaching 42,184 career points, and stands just 50 games away from breaking Robert Parish’s all-time regular-season appearances record.
Last season, James averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game, earning All-NBA honors even as the Lakers exited in the first round of the playoffs. He is the first 40-year-old to make an All-NBA team and continues to defy expectations for longevity and performance at his age.
Balancing Legacy and Lakers’ Future
Rich Paul emphasized that James’ decision was driven by a desire to compete for a fifth NBA championship while acknowledging the Lakers’ focus on building for the future. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all,” Paul told ESPN.
The Lakers remain committed to supporting James’ ambitions, but there is also an understanding that roster construction must balance immediate contention with long-term planning—especially with the recent addition of Luka Dončić and the ongoing evolution of the team.
James’ contract decision comes as the Lakers navigate other key roster moves, including the departures of Dorian Finney-Smith and Austin Reaves, both of whom declined contract options in search of new opportunities. For LeBron, the coming season could be his last in a Lakers uniform, with retirement or a new chapter looming as real possibilities.
Family Milestones and NBA Legacy
LeBron’s return also means another year sharing the court with his son, Bronny James, who was drafted by the Lakers in 2024. The duo made history last October as the first father-son pair to play together in an NBA game, a milestone LeBron has described as one of the most gratifying moments of his legendary career.
As he prepares for training camp, James has made it clear he wants to maximize what remains of his time in the league, both for himself and for the Lakers. Whether this season marks the end of an era or another chapter in his storied career, LeBron James’ 23rd NBA campaign will be one for the history books.
