Kevin Durant Was Interested in Knicks Trade, But New York Said No
Kevin Durant’s name continues to dominate the NBA rumor mill as the Phoenix Suns explore trade options for the former MVP.
In a surprising twist, multiple reports now confirm that Kevin Durant was interested in joining the New York Knicks this offseason—but the Knicks had no interest in pursuing a deal for the 15-time All-Star.
Knicks turn down Durant’s interest
According to ESPN’s Marc Spears and NBA insider Marc Stein, Durant would have welcomed a move to New York and even considered the Knicks one of his preferred destinations alongside the Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, and San Antonio Spurs.
However, New York quickly made it clear that they would not be pursuing Durant, despite his openness to the partnership. The Knicks’ decision stands in sharp contrast to 2019, when they spent months preparing to sign Durant in free agency—only for him to choose the Brooklyn Nets instead.
The reasons for New York’s lack of interest are rooted in both basketball and roster construction. While the Knicks could have theoretically built a trade package around Karl-Anthony Towns or key role players like OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Mitchell Robinson, such a deal would have gutted their defensive identity and depth.
Given Durant’s age—he turns 37 before next season—and the steep price the Suns would demand, the Knicks determined that the cost was too high for a player nearing the end of his prime.
Knicks’ offseason focus shifts elsewhere
With Durant off the table, the Knicks are now focused on other major moves, including the search for a new head coach following the departure of Tom Thibodeau. Reports indicate that New York is preparing a substantial offer for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, and is also interested in pairing Jaren Jackson Jr. with Karl-Anthony Towns in their frontcourt.
The Knicks’ talented core, led by Jalen Brunson, remains intact, and the front office appears committed to building around their current roster rather than making an all-in move for Durant at this stage of his career.
Durant’s trade market narrows
For Durant, the Knicks’ decision narrows his list of realistic landing spots. He remains open to extending with the Heat, Rockets, or Spurs, and is reportedly working with the Suns to steer the process toward one of those destinations.
Phoenix, meanwhile, is under no obligation to honor Durant’s preferences and will seek the best possible return, even if it means trading him elsewhere. With the NBA Draft approaching and the Suns eager to reshape their roster, a resolution to the Durant saga could come soon.
