Fred VanVleet Expected to Stay in Houston Rockets with New Contract Before Free Agency
The Houston Rockets are poised to secure a major piece of their championship-contending core.
Veteran point guard Fred VanVleet and the Rockets are expected to finalize a new multi-year contract ahead of the official start of free agency. The move signals Houston’s intent to maintain both stability and flexibility as the franchise enters a new era following the blockbuster acquisition of Kevin Durant.
Rockets move quickly
VanVleet, 31, has been a crucial leader for the Rockets since signing a three-year, $128.5 million deal in 2023. In his two seasons in Houston, he has averaged 15.9 points, 6.8 assists, and 1.3 steals per game, providing steady playmaking and veteran savvy to one of the NBA’s youngest and most talented rosters.
His impact has gone beyond the stat sheet, offering invaluable guidance to young stars like Alperen Şengün, Jabari Smith Jr., and Amen Thompson.
After a 52-win regular season and a run to the Western Conference Finals, the Rockets’ front office is eager to keep its core intact. With Kevin Durant now in the fold, Houston’s window to compete for a title is wide open, and VanVleet’s experience—including his 2019 championship with the Toronto Raptors and 2022 All-Star nod—makes him a vital piece in the team’s plans.
Contract structure: flexibility for both sides
According to league sources, the Rockets are expected to decline VanVleet’s $44.9 million team option for the 2025-26 season. Instead, both sides are negotiating a new contract that will likely span three years with a lower annual salary, potentially in the $30–35 million range.
This structure benefits both the team and the player: VanVleet gains long-term security and more guaranteed money, while Houston gains crucial salary cap flexibility as it manages a roster featuring both veteran stars and rising talent.
This approach mirrors the Rockets’ recent contract strategies, such as the extension for Steven Adams, and helps the team stay under the luxury tax apron. It also positions Houston to better handle future extensions for their young core, ensuring the franchise can remain competitive for years to come.
Rockets’ championship ambitions
The anticipated deal with VanVleet comes at a pivotal time for the Rockets. With Durant joining a lineup that already features Şengün, Smith Jr., and Thompson, Houston is widely viewed as a top contender in the Western Conference for the 2025-26 season. VanVleet’s leadership on and off the court will be essential as the team integrates Durant and seeks to build on last season’s playoff success.
Both VanVleet and the Rockets have expressed mutual interest in continuing their partnership. “We’re building something special here,” VanVleet said after the season, “and I want to be a part of it.”
With free agency set to open soon, all indications are that VanVleet will remain Houston’s floor general, helping to steer the franchise’s championship pursuit for years to come.
