Austin Reaves Opens Up About Lakers Future Amid Trade Rumors
As the Los Angeles Lakers enter another pivotal offseason, one of the franchise’s brightest young stars, Austin Reaves, finds himself at the center of swirling trade rumors.
Fresh off a career-best season in which he averaged 20.2 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game on efficient shooting, Austin Reaves has become both a fan favorite and a valuable trade asset as the Lakers look to retool their roster around LeBron James and Luka Doncic.
Reaves’ breakout season and rising trade value
Reaves’ ascent from undrafted free agent to one of the Lakers’ most important contributors has been rapid. At just 27, he is entering his prime and coming off a season that saw him join the likes of LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Magic Johnson as one of the few Lakers to record 50 points, 15 rebounds, and 25 assists over any two-game span.
His all-around play, basketball IQ, and ability to thrive alongside superstars have only increased his value in the eyes of rival teams and league executives.
With the Lakers falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games in the opening round of the playoffs, the front office is under pressure to make moves that will keep the team competitive in a loaded Western Conference.
The blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas for Luka Doncic has left the Lakers with a need at center, and Reaves’ team-friendly contract—averaging $14.5 million over the next two seasons—makes him an attractive piece in potential deals for a big man or another star.
Loyal to L.A. but uncertain future
Despite the constant speculation, Reaves has made his feelings clear: he wants to remain a Laker for life. Speaking at his annual basketball camp in Arkansas, Reaves addressed the rumors with candor and humility.
“I really don’t pay attention to any of it. If I hear it, it’s usually my mom asking me about it... At this point, it’s not in my control. I want to be in L.A. If they want to trade me, we’ll start something new somewhere else, but like I said, I want to be in L.A. I want to play my whole career in L.A. I love it there. I love the fans... And obviously, the Lakers are the best organization in basketball,” Reaves told reporters.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has reportedly told local media that he views Reaves, along with James and Doncic, as a “pillar” of the organization, with no immediate plans to trade him.
Still, with the Lakers’ need to balance the roster and the value Reaves holds on the market, his future remains a topic of league-wide interest. Recent reports have even linked Reaves to rival teams, including the Dallas Mavericks, should the Lakers decide to make a major move.
As the NBA offseason approaches, the Lakers face tough decisions about how to maximize their championship window. Whether Austin Reaves returns as part of a new star trio or is moved in a blockbuster deal, his breakout campaign have made him one of the most intriguing figures to watch this summer.
