The NFL's Winningest Coaches and Andy Reid's Historic Place

  • Andy Reid enters the 2026 season as the NFL's winningest active head coach. With 279 regular-season victories and three Super Bowl titles, the Kansas City Chiefs coach still has Don Shula in his sights.

Andy Reid is about to begin another season while continuing to build one of the greatest coaching résumés in NFL history. The Kansas City Chiefs head coach enters the 2026 campaign as the league's most experienced active coach in terms of victories, with three Super Bowl championships already on his résumé.

The 2026 season will be Reid's 28th as an NFL head coach. His career began with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent 14 seasons before taking over the Kansas City Chiefs, where he is also beginning his 14th campaign.

Across his previous 27 seasons, Reid has recorded only four losing seasons and has reached the playoffs 20 times.

His tenure with the Chiefs elevated his career to another level. Reid has won three Super Bowls and reached six NFL championship games. Five of those six appearances came with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback.

But Reid's place among the greatest coaches of all time extends beyond championships.

Andy Reid ranks fourth in regular-season victories

Reid currently ranks fourth all time in regular-season victories with 279 wins.

Ahead of him are three NFL legends:

  • Don Shula: 328 wins
  • George Halas: 318 wins
  • Bill Belichick: 302 wins
  • Andy Reid: 279 wins

To catch Don Shula, Reid would need another 50 victories. At a pace of 10 wins per season, that would require approximately five more seasons.

The major question is whether the Chiefs coach wants to remain on the sideline for that long.

After winning nine consecutive AFC West titles and appearing in three straight Super Bowls, Kansas City endured its most difficult season under Reid in 2025, finishing with a 6-11 record.

Reid now faces the challenge of rebuilding the team and returning it to championship contention.

Reid is also among the playoff greats

Reid's postseason résumé further highlights his place in NFL history.

The Chiefs coach has recorded 28 playoff victories, giving him the second-highest total in NFL history.

Eighteen of those postseason wins have come during his time in Kansas City.

Among active coaches chasing his total are John Harbaugh, with 24 playoff victories; Mike McCarthy, with 22; and Sean Payton, with 20.

Other active coaches climbing the record book

Behind Reid is Sean Payton, who has 184 regular-season victories and ranks 13th all time.

Payton enters another season with the Denver Broncos, with Bo Nix at quarterback, looking to continue climbing the historical list.

John Harbaugh follows closely with 180 victories and begins a new chapter with the New York Giants.

Mike McCarthy has 174 wins and takes charge of the Pittsburgh Steelers for a new chapter of his coaching career.

Further down the list is one of the youngest coaches who could eventually enter the same historical conversation if he maintains his current pace: Sean McVay.

The Los Angeles Rams head coach has 92 victories and ranks fifth among active coaches. With only nine years as a head coach and at just 40 years old, McVay still has plenty of time to build his résumé.

For now, however, Andy Reid remains the defining name among the NFL's active head coaches. His 279 regular-season victories, three Super Bowl championships and 28 playoff wins place him firmly among the league's historic coaching figures.
