NFL Bets on Artificial Intelligence to Find the Next Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes
The NFL has taken a historic step by announcing a strategic partnership with Microsoft Corp. to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) across multiple areas of professional football. This collaboration aims to revolutionize everything from the recruitment process to real-time play-calling, with the goal of discovering the next Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes and raising the overall quality of the game.
According to Gary Brantley, the league’s Chief Information Officer, this alliance marks “the beginning of a new era” in how teams operate and how fans experience the sport.
Technology at the Service of Coaches
The league explained that AI will allow coaches to access and analyze data instantly, improving accuracy in decision-making. Sean McVay, head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, highlighted that this innovation will help break down complex information and transform it into practical tools to boost player performance.
One of the most significant updates is the enhancement of the Sideline Visualization System, which now includes more than 2,500 computers. This tool provides all 32 teams with detailed monitoring of their approximately 1,800 players, with filters to evaluate specific situations such as yards to gain, offensive formations, scoring plays, or penalties.
AI to Transform the Future of Football
The implementation of these technologies will not only refine on-field strategies but also improve player safety. The NFL Players Association will have access to these solutions as part of its video review process, enhancing efficiency in injury prevention and in managing critical in-game situations.

AI will also help log key incidents such as weather delays or technical malfunctions, enabling the league to anticipate problems and optimize game-day logistics in the future.
For Bryson Gordon, Microsoft’s Vice President of Global Marketing, this agreement goes beyond sports: “It’s a transformation plan that changes the way we understand football.”
