In comments to local media, Devey's mother said the family believes he may have been living with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that has been linked to repeated head impacts in contact sports. However, she noted that this cannot be confirmed.
His wife, Lindsay, paid tribute to him in a heartfelt social media post, reflecting on their 15 years of marriage and honoring the life they built together with their four children.
Devey's football journey was unconventional. He was not selected in the 2013 NFL Draft but earned opportunities with the Baltimore Ravens before joining the Patriots, where he was part of the Super Bowl-winning roster. He later played for the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, and Buffalo Bills.
Over the course of his NFL career, Devey appeared in 44 regular-season games, making 21 starts. Beyond his accomplishments on the field, he will be remembered for his dedication to coaching and for the positive impact he had on the young players he mentored.
