Dallas Cowboys make a splash, land George Pickens in trade from Pittsburgh Steelers
The Dallas Cowboys have picked up wide receiver George Pickens, former star of the Pittsburgh Steelers, in a trade involving draft picks from the next two NFL drafts, the Texas club announced Wednesday. “We’ve reached a deal to acquire George Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round pick from the Steelers, in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-rounder,” the Cowboys said in an official statement.
Top-tier talent with a bit of baggage
At 24, Pickens is seen as one of the most talented young receivers in the league thanks to his speed and reliable hands. However, his attitude has raised some red flags. During his time with the Steelers, he was called out by head coach Mike Tomlin for refusing to block due to injury concerns and for publicly demanding a bigger role in the offense on social media.
Drafted in the second round in 2022, Pickens racked up 174 catches, 2,841 yards, and 12 touchdowns over three seasons with Pittsburgh. In 2026, if the Cowboys want to keep him, they’ll need to offer a contract in the ballpark of $30 million.
A new duo in Big D
In Dallas, George Pickens will line up as a starting receiver alongside CeeDee Lamb, with Jalen Tolbert slotting in as the third receiver and Jake Ferguson holding down the tight end role. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will be tasked with tapping into Pickens’ potential while keeping his temperament in check to fit him into the team's system.
With Pickens gone, the Steelers are now on the hunt for an experienced wideout this offseason. One name catching head coach Mike Tomlin’s eye is veteran Allen Lazard, who just got the green light from the New York Jets to explore other options. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh front office is still keeping close tabs on the potential arrival of Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback.
