Newcastle boosts top-eight hopes with PSV win
Newcastle United boosted its hopes of a top-eight finish in the Champions League as Yoane Wissa grabbed a goal and assist in their 3-0 win over PSV.
Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes were also on target for the Magpies, who sit in seventh place on 13 points ahead of their final league phase clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
Eddie Howe's side raced into an eighth-minute lead when PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar saw his poor clearance collected by Bruno Guimaraes. The Newcastle captain fed in Joelinton, who laid the ball off for Wissa to scuff into the net.
The host capitalised on some more poor defensive play from the Eredivisie leader to double its tally in the 30th minute as Yarek Gasiorowski's poor back pass was intercepted by Wissa, who squared for Gordon to tuck home.
Newcastle's exceptional first-half showing came at a cost, though, with Guimaraes forced off with an injury after colliding with Kovar, but it mattered little to the Magpies.
Its three points were sealed in the 65th minute through a brilliant solo effort from Barnes, who picked out the bottom-right corner following a mazy run from 30 yards out.
Wissa came close to adding his second late in the day, but he was unable to stretch for Barne's inviting centre, with Newcastle closing out the remaining minutes with ease.
