'We put together a truly important season' - Martinez hails Inter's domestic double
Inter have bounced back from last season's disappointment by winning Serie A and Coppa Italia to complete the domestic double.
Lautaro Martinez saluted a "truly important season" for Serie A champions Inter, after they completed the domestic double with the Coppa Italia in midweek.
The Nerazzurri have doubled up for the first time since 2010, when current head coach Cristian Chivu was part of the side that also won the Champions League under Jose Mourinho.
After cruising to reclaim the Scudetto, Inter captured the Coppa Italia crown on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Lazio, thanks to goals from Martinez and Marcus Thuram.
It was the club's 10th triumph in the competition, a tally only bettered by Juventus (15), while they have now won each of their last five finals.
And Martinez highlighted the significance of the club's achievements, having finished the 2024-25 season empty-handed, after losing the Champions League final and finishing second in Serie A.
“For us, it was a very important and meaningful victory," he said on Wednesday. "We managed to put together a truly important season in terms of play, intensity, performances and results.
"I am happy because we are finishing the year with two trophies. It has been really important for us.
"There is always a lot of talk about Inter for everything we have been doing in recent years, but we must continue down this road to win titles because that is what we want.
"This season, we have won two, and we are truly delighted."
Inter's final home game of their memorable campaign is against 19th-place Hellas Verona, whose relegation to Serie B has already been confirmed.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Inter – Federico Dimarco
Dimarco has created 93 chances in Serie A this season, surpassing the record for an Inter player since 2004-05, previously held by Luis Figo (92 in 2006-07).
The Nerazzurri wing-back has the joint-most direct goal involvements (23 – six goals, 17 assists) in the league this season with team-mate Lautaro Martinez (17 goals, six assists).
Hellas Verona – Kieron Bowie
Bowie has scored Verona's last three Serie A goals, all of which have come away from home.
The last player to score four consecutive goals for the club in the competition was Giovanni Simeone in 2021, while Antonín Barak remains the only player to have scored four successive away goals for them, doing so in 2022.
MATCH PREDICTION – INTER WIN
Inter are unbeaten in their last 29 Serie A matches against Verona (W24 D5); only against Sampdoria have the Nerazzurri had a longer unbeaten run in the competition (30 games between 1961 and 1977).
The Nerazzurri have also won each of the last eight meetings between the sides at San Siro.
Inter face Verona with at least a 65-point difference in the Serie A table (85-20), setting a new record for the biggest points gap between the two sides in the competition.
Chivu's side have scored at least two goals in 26 Serie A matches this season; in the three-points-for-a-win era (since 1994-95), they have only bettered this in the 2006-07 and 2023-24 campaigns (both 27 games).
Verona, meanwhile, have failed to score in 19 Serie A matches this season; only in the 1988-89 campaign have they ended more games (20) without scoring in a single top-flight campaign.
OPTA WIN PROBABILITY
Inter – 73.6%
Draw – 15.7%
Hellas Verona – 10.8%
