Volpato assist not enough as Sassuolo loses again
Australian-born Cristian Volpato came off the bench to provide a slick assist for Sassuolo as it took on Cremonese in Serie A, but it wasn't enough prevent a 3-2 defeat for the visitors.
Volpato, who has decided to represent Italy rather than Australia at international level, picked up a pass just outside the box on 63 minutes and threaded a superb ball to Andrea Pinamonti, sparking a Sassuolo comeback after it had conceded two goals in two minutes in the first half.
Filippo Terraccioano scored first for Cremonese in the 37th minute before Franco Vazquez doubled the lead two minutes later.
Having hit the crossbar earlier in the match, Pinamonti's strike from Volpato's pass got Sassuolo going, and it was level on 73 minutes after Domenico Berardi scored from the spot.
But deep into stoppage-time, Cremonese won a penalty of its own, allowing Manuel De Luca to do what Berardi had done at the other end, sealing the win from 12 yards.
Victory keeps Cremonese perfect over the first two matches of the new season and now top of the early Serie A standings, while Sassuolo remains rock bottom as it searches for its first point of the new campaign.
