Milan drops more points in Scudetto hunt
AC Milan dropped more points in the race for the Serie A title as Christopher Nkunku's 90th-minute leveller salvaged a 1-1 draw with Fiorentina at Stadio Artemio Franchi.
Milan remains second on 40 points, three behind Inter Milan, which fortunately for the Rossoneri could also only manage a point after conceding a late equaliser to Napoli later in the day.
Milan came close to opening the scoring 20 minutes in, but Christian Pulisic's close-range shot was saved by David de Gea after good work from Niclas Fullkrug in the build-up.
Pulisic then rifled a left-footed drive just wide of the right-hand post soon after, before Cher Ndour saw his header comfortably gathered by Mike Maignan at the other end.
Fiorentina started the better of the two sides after the interval as Fabiano Parisi stung the palms of Maignan, with the hosts' persistence rewarded in the 66th minute of the game.
After Robin Gosens had gone close with a header, Pietro Comuzzo put Fiorentina into the lead, as he rose highest to glance Albert Gudmundsson's corner into the bottom corner.
But just as it looked as though Milan was set for a second league defeat of the season, substitute Nkunku drilled in at the near post after Youssouf Fofana's neat pass in behind the defence.
Fiorentina almost snatched all three points in second-half stoppage-time, but Marco Brescianini hit the crossbar before Moise Keane's attempt was repelled by Maignan.
Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri fumed at his players after the match.
"We had a good first half, and chances to score that we didn't convert. Then, after the break, Fiorentina had more of the ball," he said.
"After going a goal down, we had patience to get the ball into the final third, but after equalising, we made the same mistakes we did against Genoa.
"There were still seven minutes to go and with that much time, you cannot lose the ball cheaply, you've got to play it better near the penalty area. The lads know this."
Allegri chose to make six changes to the side that beat Genoa last time out, with the likes of Luka Modric, Adrien Rabiot, Rafael Leao and Youssouf Fofana all named on the bench.
"I think we did a bit better after the changes, and we needed to be more focused on the set play, as these are situations that can transform a game," he added.
"The team used up a lot of energy in the first half. [Ruben] Loftus-Cheek, [Ardon] Jashari, [Samuele] Ricci and [Pervis] Estupinan did well. We needed to rest some players who have been regulars this season.
"It takes patience, because we want to reach the end of May in the top four, and that is not easy. Nkunku does well as a centre-forward.
"[Rafael] Leao wasn't in good physical shape today, we are working to get everyone recovered, and I'm pleased."
While Milan dropped points for the eighth time this season, Allegri remained optimistic of finishing in the top four and potentially challenging for the Serie A title.
"We have to focus on ourselves and getting back to winning ways, because we drew the last two, there are still 34–36 points to go for a [UEFA] Champions League spot," he continued.
"Let's not lose sight of reality, we started with 50 per cent of the squad changed, we're doing well and must try to improve."
