Brentford brings Henderson back to Premier League
After spells in Saudi Arabia and Netherlands, Jordan Henderson is back in the Premier League after joining Brentford.
The England international has signed a two-year contract with the Bees, arriving on a free transfer after he left Ajax this summer.
Brentford manager Keith Andrews said: "When we became aware of Jordan's availability, it was a pretty simple decision.
"We did our due diligence around his recent games to see where he is: he's still phenomenally fit and he's still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot."
Henderson made his Premier League debut as an 18-year-old with Sunderland before moving to Liverpool in 2011.
He went on to captain the Reds in 2015, lifting eight trophies, including the UEFA Champions League and Premier League.
The midfielder spent one season with Al-Ettifaq before joining Ajax in the Eredivisie in 2024.
During his time in the English top-flight, Henderson played 431 games and provided 33 goals and 53 assists.
He has made 84 appearances for his country and was named England Senior Men's Player of the Year in 2019.
With Brentford losing club captain Christian Norgaard to Arsenal earlier in the window, Henderson's leadership could prove to be a vital addition.
"With the void of experienced players leaving the building – Christian Norgaard, Mark Flekken and Ben Mee – it was important to replace that," Andrews said.
"But what Jordan will bring is that he has been one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League years. He's been at the forefront of driving for titles and [UEFA] Champions Leagues at a fantastic football club."
Brentford begins its 2025-2026 Premier League campaign away to Nottingham Forest on 18 August (AEST), with Henderson facing former club Sunderland at The Stadium of Light two weeks later.
The 35-year-old will get the chance to play against Liverpool for the first time since leaving Anfield on 26 October (AEST) when Brentford takes on Arne Slot's team at Gtech Community Stadium.
