MLS: Red Bulls hit back to topple Revs in stunning comeback
Denis Bouanga broke a club record for Los Angeles FC on Wednesday, while the New York Red Bulls stunned the New England Revolution.
The New York Red Bulls forged a brilliant comeback to topple the New England Revolution 5-3 in an eight-goal thriller.
All the Red Bulls' goals came in the second half as they hit back from 2-0 down, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Emil Forsberg scoring twice each.
New England's Leonardo Campana had opened the scoring in the fifth minute, before Kyle Duncan's own goal put the Revs further ahead.
Yet Daniel Edelman's effort just before the hour sparked a fantastic comeback.
Choupo-Moting buried a left-footed effort after fine set-up play from Forsberg, who then propelled the Red Bulls into the lead with a superb finish from the edge of the area.
New York had a two-goal cushion when Choupo-Moting doubled his tally in the 83rd minute, before Forsberg completed their comeback with a coolly taken penalty.
There was still time for Campana to grab his second of the game, but it was nothing more than a consolation in stoppage time, as New England fell eight points behind the Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference.
The Colorado Rapids also staged a stunning comeback in a 3-3 draw with the Seattle Sounders.
Albert Rusnak's second goal of the night had Seattle 3-0 up by the 47th minute at Lumen Field, but the Rapids did not go down lightly.
Quickfire penalties from Djordje Mihailovic and Cole Bassett dragged Colorado back into the contest, and Darren Yapi came off the bench to score his first goal since May and secure a share of the spoils.
Elsewhere, Los Angeles FC's Denis Bouanga made club history as Steve Cherundolo's team claimed a potentially crucial win over Minnesota United.
Bouanga converted a 42nd-minute spot-kick as LAFC snapped a four-game unbeaten streak for the Loons with a 1-0 win.
He has now scored a game-winning goal on 20 occasions for LAFC, surpassing Carlos Vela's previous record tally of 19 such goals.
LAFC's win moved them to within five points of Minnesota, who dropped down to third in the Western Conference and below the Vancouver Whitecaps, following their 3-0 defeat of the Houston Dynamo. Western leaders San Diego FC, meanwhile, went down 1-0 to Toronto FC.
Data Debrief: Subs are Seattle's weakness
Following Yapi's efforts from the bench, the Sounders have now conceded six goals to opposition substitutes in MLS this season. Only FC Dallas (eight) and Minnesota (nine) have conceded more such goals.
Colorado's winless run on the road has stretched to eight matches, and they have conceded multiple goals in each of those games, but they can surely see this comeback as a springboard for the latter stages of the season.
Meanwhile, Choupo-Moting has now scored in his last five home games for the Red Bulls. The only player to have a longer such scoring streak for the club in the past 15 years is Bradley Wright-Phillips.
The Red Bulls had 21 shots against the Revs, with Choupo-Moting and Forsberg responsible for 12 of them (six each).
