Fermin's World Cup hopes in major doubt after foot injury
Spain could be without Fermin Lopez for the 2026 World Cup after the Barcelona midfielder fractured his foot against Real Betis.
Barcelona have revealed Fermin Lopez has suffered a fractured foot and will undergo surgery, throwing his World Cup hopes into doubt.
The 23-year-old was taken off at half-time during Barca's 3-1 victory over Real Betis on Sunday, with the club announcing he has a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot.
Only Gerard Martin (50) and Eric Garcia (50) have featured more often for Barca this season than Fermin, who has made 48 appearances in all competitions.
The midfielder has scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists for Hansi Flick's side in 2025-26, with only Lamine Yamal directly contributing to more goals (41) for the club.
Fermin could now miss the 2026 World Cup, with Spain one of the favourites to win the competition hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
He made three appearances during Spain's qualifying campaign, while also featuring once during their Euro 2024 triumph.
Spain will face Cape Verde in the Group H opener on June 15, before facing Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
