Vazquez bids emotional farewell to Real Madrid
Real Madrid has confirmed that Lucas Vazquez is ending his long spell at the club after a trophy-laden 10-year spell in the first team.
Vazquez's contract expired at the end of the 2024-2025 domestic season, but he signed a short-term extension in order to play at the FIFA Club World Cup.
He made just two appearances at the tournament in the United States, as Madrid was knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual runner-up Paris Saint-Germain.
Vazquez, who joined Madrid as a 16-year-old, made 402 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 38 goals and registering 59 assists.
Vazquez won 23 trophies during his time with Los Blancos, including four LaLiga titles, five UEFA Champions Leagues, three FIFA Club World Cups and three UEFA Super Cups.
In a goodbye video, Vazquez said: "We've lived unforgettable nights together, celebrated 23 titles and created memories that will stay with me forever.
"After more than 400 matches, it's time to say goodbye to the club of my life.
"But I leave with peace of mind knowing I gave it my all. I've always been aware of the responsibility and privilege that comes with wearing this badge.
"I've enjoyed every match, training session, trip, and if there's one thing this journey has taught me, it's that no one should ever tell you that you can't achieve something.
"I may be leaving Real Madrid, but Real Madrid will never leave me. Wherever I go, I will proudly say that I had the honour of playing for the greatest club in the world. Thank you for being part of the most beautiful journey of my life."
Vazquez has spent his entire career at Madrid, outside of a season-long loan to Espanyol in 2014-2015.
"Lucas Vazquez represents in an exemplary way the values of Real Madrid, which has made him one of the most loved players by our fans," Madrid president Florentino Perez said.
"The figure of Lucas Vazquez symbolises the hard work, perseverance, humility, and winning spirit that are essential for success in this shirt.
"He is a player who has the affection and recognition of all Madridistas. Real Madrid is and always will be his home."
Vazquez's exit comes after Madrid signed Trent Alexander-Arnold to occupy the right-back position, with the former Liverpool man playing five of their six games at the FIFA Club World Cup.
