Scaloni offers challenge for Argentina’s ‘new guys’ ahead of friendly
Argentina face Puerto Rico in the second of two friendlies during this October break, and Lionel Scaloni revealed he will rotate his side.
Lionel Scaloni revealed that Argentina’s “new guys” will play in their friendly against Puerto Rico, hoping they will make the most of their opportunity.
The reigning World Cup champions topped the South American qualifying group, finishing nine points ahead of second-place Ecuador.
Although Lionel Messi has returned to training with Argentina after missing their friendly against Venezuela, Scaloni will continue trying new tactics ahead of their title defence next summer.
He played a 5-3-2 formation against Venezuela, and is set to give new players a chance against Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi will be hoping to get another start under Scaloni, while Anibal Moreno and Lautaro Rivero will also be looking to make an impact.
“On Tuesday, all the new guys who have joined will surely play. I hope they take advantage of the opportunity,” said Scaloni.
When reflecting on their 1-0 win against Venezuela, the head coach added: “The test is very useful for us; it shows us that all our rivals are tough.
“All our opponents play at 100%. Venezuela played a good game.
“We won, but that’s not the important thing. We wanted to see how the team was doing and get some playing time under our belts.
“I wanted to try the 5-3-2 option, which is an interesting variation, and we have the players to do it. There are times when defensive solidity is needed.”
