Ticket prices soar for Socceroos clash with USA
Australia's upcoming Group D clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup against co-host United States could turn out to be one of the most expensive non-knockout matches at the tournament after starting prices reportedly surged off the back of the USA's win over Paraguay on Saturday (AEST).
According to the resale market, theytickets for the 21 June clash now start at $US1,735 ($A2,461).
That represents an enormous 61 per cent increase over the past three days, with much of that spike coming after the USA's 4-1 rout of Paraguay.
There is also plenty of time for the price to climb further, with the match still a week away in Seattle.
The Group D finale on 26 June (AEST) against Turkiye has seen an even greater proportional spike over the same stretch, with the price up 73 per cent to $US1,516 ($A2,151).
If this reflects surging expectations for a United States squad that has seen mixed performances in recent years, it's understandable after the victory over Paraguay that was powered by two goals from Folarin Balogun, another from Gio Reyna and a Paraguay own-goal.
It was the first time United States had ever scored four times in a FIFA World Cup finals match and only the third time it had won by three goals.
The other two three-goal triumphs were 3-0 group stage wins over Belgium and Paraguay in the inaugural 1930 tournament, played in Uruguay.
Australia will be looking to cause an upset for the ages when the two sides meet.
The Socceroos have played the USA three times since 2010, losing twice and winning once. The most recent encounter last year ended in a 2-1 win to the USA, but Australia's recent form is better, having lost only one of its past five matches while the USA lost three.
