Bayern out to seal Bundesliga title while Dortmund eye top-four finish
The Bundesliga title race could be settled on Saturday, with Bayern Munich needing a win against RB Leipzig to take the crown.
Bayern Munich can secure a 34th Bundesliga crown on Saturday at RB Leipzig, but the race for Europe below them is heating up.
Vincent Kompany is on the brink of reclaiming the top-flight title for the German record champions in his first season in charge, a year after Bayer Leverkusen won a surprise league and DFB-Pokal in an unbeaten domestic campaign.
Bayern currently hold an eight-point advantage over the reigning champions, having accumulated 75 points, with Leverkusen in second with 67 before travelling to fourth-placed Champions League hopeful Freiburg on Sunday.
Harry Kane, Bayern's top scorer, is looking to land the first title of his career, but he is suspended for Saturday's game after a costly booking against Mainz last week.
They will win the title if they beat fifth-placed Leipzig, or if they fail to win, they will clinch top spot on Sunday if Leverkusen do not better their result.
Bayern have only lost one of their last 10 competitive games at Leipzig (W4, D5): 2-1 in the Bundesliga in March 2018. They have lost just two games all season (W23 D6).
With the top two spots wrapped up, at least five teams are in with a fighting chance for a top-four finish that leads to automatic Champions League qualification.
Eintracht Frankfurt, who face European hopefuls Mainz on Sunday, are third on 55 points, four ahead of Freiburg, and are almost certain of a Champions League spot.
Freiburg are currently the favourites to round out the top four, according to the Opta supercomputer, at 40.9%.
Borussia Dortmund, given a 26.4% chance of finishing fourth, are sixth with 48 points, three behind Freiburg, and have endured a rollercoaster domestic season.
From being labelled as early title contenders, they are now battling to secure a Champions League place to rescue something from an otherwise disappointing campaign, and host Wolfsburg on Sunday.
Dortmund have won four of their last five Bundesliga matches, with coach Niko Kovac and his players confident they can still finish in the top four.
In fact, they have collected 19 points from nine games since the start of matchday 23 (W6 D1 L2), with only Bayern and Leverkusen claiming more during this period (20 each).
"What has characterised us in the past weeks is that everyone wants the success of the team," said defender Waldemar Anton. "That is how we got our belief back.
"We just kept at it, and that is why I am happy that we are still in with a realistic chance."
At the other end of the table, it could be curtains for bottom club Bochum if they lose Friday's relegation battle at Heidenheim, who are four points above them in 16th place and sit in the relegation play-off spot.
