The decision was announced on Friday, the final day of Broos's contract, and the 74-year-old departs five years after taking charge of Bafana Bafana.

Broos was appointed in 2019 and oversaw 60 matches across all competitions, winning 29 of those and posting a win ratio of 46.2 per cent.

The Belgian's arrival came after South Africa's failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021, and he led the team to a third-place finish in the 2023 edition.

He then helped Bafana Bafana qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 24 years and marked their first appearance in the tournament since 2010, when South Africa was the tournament host, by overseeing a run to the Round of 32 at the 2026 edition.

South Africa qualified for the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time, becoming the seventh African nation to reach the knockout stages at FIFA's flagship competition.

It finished second in Group A with four points, with its triumph over Korea Republic in its final group game just its third win in the FIFA World Cup and its first against a non-European team, before it was knocked out by co-host Canada. 

Broos had previously said his departure from his role as South Africa boss was "irreversible", but he was open to an alternative role within the nation's football federation.

However, the SAFA has now confirmed Broos's exit and pushed back on reports that he had been offered a one-year contract extension.

Broos leaves as South Africa's longest-serving head coach. Pitso Mosimane is the reported frontrunner to replace him.

Mosimane, who had previously taken charge of Bafana Bafana between 2010 and 2012, has also enjoyed stints with the Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly, winning the CAF Champions League three times during his time at both teams.
