Seeds emerge unscathed in Hobart
Camila Giorgi, Alize Cornet and Alison Van Uytvanck all won their first-round matches on Sunday.
Italian second seed Camila Giorgi bounced back from her swift exit in Brisbane with a three-set win over Zarina Diyas at the Hobart International.
Giorgi was bundled out in the first round of the Brisbane International by eventual runner-up Angelique Kerber on Monday.
But Giorgi, who reached the quarter-finals in Hobart last year, got her Australian Open preparations back on track via a 6-4 1-6 6-1 opening round victory on Sunday.
Despite only serving at 58 per cent and tallying seven double faults, Giorgi managed to do enough to see off her Kazakhstani opponent in an hour, 46 minutes.
Awaiting Giorgi in the second round is the winner of Pauline Parmentier versus Nao Hibino.
Fellow seeds Alize Cornet (seventh) and Alison Van Uytvanck also advanced to the next round of the WTA Tour tournament.
Playing on centre court, Frenchwoman and world number 43 Cornet downed Denisa Allertova 6-5 7-5.
Cornet converted all six of her break point opportunities to move into the next round, where she will meet either Veronica Cepede Royg or Laura Pous-Tio.
As for Belgian Van Uytvanck, she faces a potential second-round showdown with Eugenie Bouchard if she defeats Bethanie Mattek-Sands after accounting for Carina Witthoeft 6-2 7-6 (7-5).
"I think it's going to be an interesting match," Van Uytvanck said. "I've played Mattek-Sands already in Wimbledon, she's a really good player. Bouchard is also very good. It will be interesting and I'm looking forward to it."
The opening match of the day saw Margarita Gasparyan beat Maddison Inglis 6-4 6-3.
