Kvitova fights back to claim Connecticut Open
After a tight first set, Petra Kvitova proved too good for Lucie Safarova, completing her US Open preparations in perfect fashion.
Petra Kvitova continued her perfect record against fellow Czech Lucie Safarova to win her third title of the year at the Connecticut Open.
Safarova edged out Kvitova in the opening set tie-break but the latter was too strong from then on in New Haven, winning 6-7 (6-8) 6-2 6-2 in two hours, 20 minutes.
Kvitova made it six wins from six matches against Safarova, while adding the Connecticut Open trophy to those she won at the Sydney International and Madrid Open in 2015.
Two straight breaks of serve for Kvitova saw her take control in the second set, with the world number five surging to a 5-1 lead before serving out the set to force a decider.
Kvitova again got the early break in the third set as she built a 3-1 advantage and, after breaking world number six Safarova again in the seventh game, the 25-year-old clinched victory with her first match point.
