Kvitova ends Serena streak to reach final
Serena Williams suffered her first loss of 2015 with a straight-sets defeat to Petra Kvitova in the Madrid Open semi-final.
Petra Kvitova dealt Serena Williams her fist loss of 2015 as she claimed a 6-2 6-3 win over the world number one to reach the final of the Madrid Open.
Williams had won all five meetings between the two before Friday's clash, but found herself outgunned by the Wimbledon champion as Kvitova ended the American's 27-match winning streak.
It was an uncharacteristic performance from Williams, who struggled on serve throughout, holding just once in the first set.
Having saved three match points to beat Victoria Azarenka in the third round, Williams seemed to be preparing another fightback when she broke Kvitova at 5-2 down in the second.
But again the 33-year-old's serve failed her as Kvitova clinched her place in the final against Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Kvitova said: "I'm happy that I won today. I never beat her [before] so for me it's a special moment. I'm really happy to be in the final.
"I know how Svetlana is playing, I know that she is going to be very tough. It's a big challenge tomorrow [Saturday]."
Earlier, Kuznetsova had produced a stunning performance to shock defending champion Maria Sharapova 6-2 6-4.
Kuznetsova faced just one break point in the match and should be confident of putting up a similar performance versus Kvitova, who she beat in the third round of the French Open last year.
"I feel very happy, it was a very tough match," Kuznetsova said. "I was playing good, serving good - everything was working well.
"Petra is also a great player. I'm just happy to be in the final and will prepare and try to do my best tomorrow."
