Inspired Radwanska reaches first Singapore final
Garbine Muguruza's brilliant year will not end with a victory in Singapore after she was beaten by Agnieszka Radwanska on Saturday.
Agnieszka Radwanska fought back from a set down to reach the final of the WTA Finals for the first time at the expense of Garbine Muguruza.
Rising star Muguruza had won all four of her contests against Radwanska this year, but the in-form Pole ended that sequence in Singapore on Saturday to stand on the brink of the biggest win of her career.
World number six Radwanska will face either Maria Sharapova or Petra Kvitova in the final on Sunday after seeing off the powerful Muguruza 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 7-5.
Radwanska lost her first two matches of the showpiece in the Far East, but has responded in emphatic fashion and had too much for Spaniard Muguruza - who misses out on a place in the final on her debut in the tournament.
The impressive Radwanska has ended the year in brilliant form and won seven of the 15 break-point opportunities she manufactured to become the first Pole to reach the final.
The contrasting styles were evident from the outset as Muguruza used her power from the back of the court and Radwanska countered with precision.
Muguruza's power helped her break in the opening game, but it led to troubles in the second – a series of errors seeing her fail to consolidate from 40-15.
Radwanska's craftiness, including a drop shot and well-disguised slice, saw her break for a 3-1 lead. But Muguruza settled and was back on serve thanks to an impressive seventh game as she broke to love.
The fifth seed battled for a hold to go up 5-4, but Muguruza showed no nerves as she held easily to take the opening set.
Radwanska set about putting that disappointment behind her as she claimed a double-break to surge into a 4-0 lead in the second with some patient and clever play.
There was hope for Muguruza when she made it 4-2, but Radwanska was in the zone as she broke again with a brilliant return to take the second set.
Radwanska's recent record against Muguruza was clearly not playing on her mind as she went 3-0 up in the decider, but the rising star was not finished yet as she fought back to level at 4-4 in what was proving to be a thriller.
Muguruza then dug deep to save two break points in the next game, but bowed out when Radwanska avoided the tension of a tie-break to win her second match point and claim another decisive break to reach the final.
