Defending champion Vandeweghe dumped out by Bertens
CoCo Vandeweghe's reign as WTA Topshelf Open came to an end when she was beaten by home hope Kiki Bertens on Friday.
Kiki Bertens is just one victory away from reaching the WTA Topshelf Open final on home soil after seeing off defending champion CoCo Vandeweghe in the quarter-finals.
Bertens beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to reach the last eight after seeing off Zhang Shuai in the first round and Vandeweghe was the latest player to suffer at the hands of the world number 132 on Friday.
The Wateringen native saw off the third seed 6-4 6-1 by winning half of the eight break points that she earned and denying Vandeweghe with the only two break opportunities that came the American's way.
Bertens served up six double faults, but did not let them affect her as she conjured up a clinical display to move into the last four at the expense of last year's winner.
The 23-year-old saved when Vandeweghe had a chance to take a 4-2 lead and took the upper hand in the following game by claiming the first break in the opening set.
She then failed to win four break points to wrap up the first set, but made no mistake by serving out the set and then brushed the world number 34 aside in the second set - racing into a 4-0 lead and finishing off the job.
Bertens will face Camila Giorgi at the semi-final stage after the fifth seed from Italy fought back to beat Yaroslava Shvedova 4-6 6-3 7-6 (11-9) on Friday.
Giorgi had all sorts of problems on serve, double-faulting 23 times, but hung in there and saved eight break points before edging a tense final-set tie-break to move into the last four.
Jelena Jankovic did not have to endure a marathon encounter to seal her semi-final spot, as the second seed took just 71 minutes to beat Annika Beck 6-4 6-1.
Serb Jankovic claimed five breaks to her German opponent's two to seal a last-four meeting with Belinda Bencic.
Bencic, seeded four, was also taken to three sets by powerful server Kristina Mladenovic - who sent down 16 aces - but came through 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (4-7) 7-5.
