Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych were relatively untroubled in winning their first-round matches at the French Open.

Seeded third at Roland Garros, Murray had few problems in seeing off world number 137 Facundo Arguello 6-3 6-3 6-1, while fourth seed Berdych was similarly ruthless in overcoming Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0 7-5 6-3.

Murray's only real wobble came when he was broken in game five of the first set when already a break up, but he soon recovered his composure to hit back in game eight on his way to taking the set.

Two more breaks in the second followed and Murray repeated that trick in the third as the world number three eased into round two.

After bagelling Nishioka in the first set, Berdych was made to work much harder in the second, prevailing with a crucial break in the final game. The third set was a more straightforward affair, as Berdych booked a second-round clash with Radek Stepanek, who saw off Ivan Dodig in four sets.

Gael Monfils triumphed 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 7-5 in his all-French affair with Edouard Roger-Vasselin, while Gilles Simon and Benoit Paire were other home hopes to advance, against Lucas Pouille and Gastao Elias respectively.

Juan Monaco edged out fellow Argentinian Federico Delbonis in a five-set epic, and Benjamin Becker came from two sets to one down to overcome Ruben Bemelmans 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 2-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-2.

Fabio Fognini made short work of Tastuma Ito 6-3 6-2 6-2, while there were also routine wins for Martin Klizan against Frances Tiafoe and Fernando Verdasco over Taro Daniel.

Dominic Thiem, who claimed his maiden ATP Tour title in Nice on Saturday, continued his good form with a four-set win over Aljaz Bedene, and Bernard Tomic saw off Luca Vanni

Australia's Nick Kyrgios eased past Denis Istomin 6-3 6-4 6-4, and his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis saw off Nikoloz Basilashivili in four sets.

Feliciano Lopez was dumped out in straight sets by Teymuraz Gabashvili, while Pablo Cuevas defeated Sam Groth and Sergiy Stakhovsky ousted Ricards Berankis 6-2 7-5 6-1. 

David Goffin recovered from losing the first set against Filip Krajinovic to prevail 3-6 6-2 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 and Tommy Robredo did likewise versus Andrey Golubev.

Thomaz Bellucci, fresh from winning the Geneva Open, came through in straight sets over Marinko Matosevic, as did Santiago Giraldo against Donald Young.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Borna Coric, Diego Schwartzman, Simone Bolelli, Andrey Kuznetsov, Viktor Troicki, Jurgen Melzer and Kyle Edmund.
