Djokovic surprised by Zverev in Boodles exhibition
Alexander Zverev delivered a startling demonstration of his promise by beating world number one Novak Djokovic at The Boodles.
Novak Djokovic suffered a surprise defeat in his preparations for Wimbledon as he was beaten in straight sets by Alexander Zverev at The Boodles.
The world number one and defending Wimbledon champion had beaten Richard Gasquet in his first game since the French Open on Thursday, but succumbed to 18-year-old Zverev 6-4 6-3 at Stoke Park on Friday.
Zverev broke the Serb in the first game of each set and wrapped up a superb victory with his third break of the match in the second as Djokovic netted a backhand.
Asked after the exhibition match how it felt to beat the world's best player, Zverev - who will compete in his first grand slam at Wimbledon next week - joked: "Normal.
"That was great fun, I think we both enjoyed it. I'm really happy."
Djokovic added: "I knew how good he [Zverev] is. The way he is playing I think he's got a very good chance to get at least to the second week [of Wimbledon].
"I'm sure he's excited to be where he is at the moment. He's got a bright future ahead of him."
Jack Sock was also victorious as he saw off Tommy Robredo 6-4 7-5.
