Anderson surprises Wawrinka at Queen's
Kevin Anderson had too much for French Open champion Stan Wawrinka as he progressed in straight sets at Queen's Club.
Stan Wawrinka was dumped out of the second round of the Aegon Championship as Kevin Anderson triumphed 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (13-11) on Wednesday.
French Open champion Wawrinka was unable to find an answer to the big-serving South African in successive tie-breaks at London's Queen's Club.
Anderson, who beat Lleyton Hewitt in round one, showed neat touch around the grass court and hit 22 aces throughout a dominant performance.
Second seed Wawrinka was up against it from the off and saved break point in the first game of the match. Aside from that, though, there were few opportunities for either man in a tight opener.
Wawrinka had the perfect chance to wrap the set up with two break points when leading 6-5, but Anderson saved the first with a brave serve and volley, before Wawrinka put the second into the net as Anderson recovered to force the tie-break.
Anderson quickly raced into a 4-0 lead and Wawrinka showed his frustration by banging his racquet into the floor when he missed a forehand down the line. The Swiss fought his way back to 5-4 with a couple of quick points, but Anderson recovered his composure and took the first set with a deep volley.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with Anderson twice seeing break points going begging en route to another tie-break.
The breaker went back-and-forth as Anderson saw five match-points go begging, while Wawrinka had three chances to level the match himself.
Wawrinka put a wild forehand out when 11-10 up and then went wide with the next point, before Anderson served out the match with another huge ace to set up a quarter-final tie against the winner of Rafael Nadal's conqueror Alexandr Dolgopolov and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Elsewhere in round two, seventh seed Gilles Simon defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-4 6-2.
