Querrey claims Delray Beach title
Sam Querrey secured an eighth career ATP title following a straight-sets victory over Rajeev Ram in the Delray Beach Open final.
American Sam Querrey claimed the 2016 Delray Beach Open title after a straight-sets win over countryman Rajeev Ram on Sunday.
Querrey, the world number 61, prevailed 6-4 7-6 (8-6) over Ram in one hour, 25 minutes to secure an eighth career ATP title - his first since the Farmers Classic in 2012.
It was a surprise final of sorts, with Querrey knocking out Juan Martin del Potro in the semi-finals, while Ram managed to oust fourth seed Grigor Dimitrov.
Querrey broke serve twice to take out the first set despite an impressive start from Ram.
Ram managed to win 77 per cent of points from his first serve in the second set and the players traded breaks, leading to a tie-break.
Ram looked certain to take the match to a third set after racing out to a 5-2 lead, but Querrey won six of the next seven points to even the tie-break, take the lead, and then complete the victory against a Ram serve.
"He had a great week," Ram said after the match. "To come out in February and win a title already is really impressive."
