The United States kept their hopes of reaching the Davis Cup quarter-finals alive on Saturday as Mike and Bob Bryan claimed victory in an enthralling five-set doubles clash with Great Britain's Dominic Inglot and Jamie Murray.

Great Britain went into the doubles rubber in command following singles wins from Jamie Murray's brother Andy, the world number five, and James Ward on Friday.

But the Bryan brothers ensured the tie will go to the final day as they held off a superb fightback from Inglot and Murray to win 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-7 (8-10) 9-7 in three hours and 37 minutes in Glasgow.

Inglot and Murray saved a match point in the fourth-set tie-break to force a decider, but the quality of their opponents eventually told to leave the USA in with a shout ahead of Sunday's final singles rubbers.

France will meet the winners of that tie after they wrapped up a 3-0 victory over Germany thanks to Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut's triumph in the doubles against Benjamin Becker and Andre Begemann.

Benneateau and Mahut were in command throughout on their way to a 6-4 6-3 6-2 success in one hour and 51 minutes.

Serbia also eased through to the last eight as world number one Novak Djokovic – who replaced Viktor Troicki for the doubles  – and partner Nenad Zimonjic put the Croatian duo of Marin Draganja and Franko Skugor to the sword 6-3 6-4 6-1.

Italy are one win away from progression following a 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-7 (13-15) 6-4 victory for their doubles pairing of Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini over Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov.

Bolelli and Fognini spurned six match points in a third set tie-break before finally closing out the contest in the fourth. 

Last year's champions Switzerland have work to do to progress after falling 2-1 down to Belgium as Adrien Bossel and Michael Lammer lost 1-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 Ruben Bemelmans and Niels Desein.

Adam Pavlasek and Jiri Vesely beat Sam Groth and Lleyton Hewitt in five sets to keep Czech Republic in their first-round tie with Australia.

Elsewhere, Brazil lead Argentina 2-1 after Bruno Soares and Marcelo Melo's doubles win over Diego Schwartzman and Carlos Berlocq.
