Merritt claims maiden title at Quicken Loans National
American Troy Merritt broke through for his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Quicken Loans National in Virginia on Sunday.
Troy Merritt's wait for a maiden crown came to an end at the Quicken Loans National, where he triumphed by three strokes.
American Merritt carded a final-round 67 to finish the PGA Tour event 18 under through 72 holes, ahead of Rickie Fowler at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Virginia on Sunday.
Merritt, who went 10 under the card in the third round, had only ever had four top-10s on tour since joining in 2010.
The 29-year-old shot a three-under 33 on the front nine, then coasted to a one-under 34 on the back nine, holing five birdies and one bogey throughout in his 96th career start on tour.
World number eight and countryman Fowler, who was one shot adrift at the start of play, made seven birdies and five bogeys for a 69 and second place behind Merritt.
David Lingmerth (69) finished third after four straight rounds in the 60s.
The Swede broke through for his first PGA Tour win at the Memorial Tournament when he out-duelled Justin Rose in a play-off.
Defending champion Rose (70) came up just short in his bid for back-to-back titles, finishing in a tie for fourth at 12 under.
Danny Lee (69), Justin Thomas (67), Bill Haas (70), Carl Pettersson (70) and Jason Bohn (71) were also six shots off the pace.
Tiger Woods closed out the Quicken Loans National on a positive note, sharing 18th alongside two others at eight under - his best finish since the Masters.
Woods registered a final-round 68. The 14-time major winner was five under through 10 holes, before bogeying three of his next four.
