Having already secured the La Liga title at the weekend, following a 1-0 Leo Messi inspired victory over Levante, Ernesto Valverde’s side will now turn their attention to the Champions League. It’s no secret that the Champions League is the top priority for the Blaugaura, driven by the desire to give Messi a fifth Champions League title to draw him level with rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
Barca has been imperious at home in the Champions League this season, conceding just two goals and scoring fifteen in their five games in the competition. Unsurprisingly Leo Messi leads the way in the tournaments goal scoring stakes with ten goals and is just two away from 600 club goals for his club. Despite such an impressive record on home soil, Valverde will be impressing on his side the importance of defending well and not allowing Liverpool to get an away goal, especially with the second leg coming up at Anfield.
In team news, Valverde was able to rest a couple of players with Liverpool coming up. Both Leo Messi & Sergio Busquets enjoyed second-half cameos and should start on Wednesday. Valverde also has to make a decision on starting Dembele or Coutinho alongside Messi & Suarez in a front three. Whilst Sergi Roberto could be preferred instead of Nelson Semedo at right-back.
Barcelona Predicted Team
ter Stegen; Alba, Lenglet, Pique, Roberto; Arthur, Busquets, Rakitic; Coutinho, Suarez, Messi

As for Liverpool, they are still in the thick of a battle with Manchester City for the Premier League title which looks set to go down to the wire. The Reds kept up their side of bargain brushing aside already relegated Huddersfield 5-0, giving them plenty of time to focus for their trip to Barcelona. Whilst Virgil van Dijk picked up the PFA player of the year award in recognition of his outstanding season with the Reds.
Liverpool has excelled in the Champions League in the last two years and will be looking to reach a second consecutive final under Jurgen Klopp. Last time the two sides met in the Champions League, Liverpool progressed on away goals following a 2-2 draw. That campaign would ultimately end in disappointment for the Reds who lost in the final to AC Milan 2-1.
In team news, there are question marks around the fitness of Roberto Firmino who sat out the win against Huddersfield. With the Brazilain just returning to training, Klopp will have to see if he can travel with the squad and be up to the challenge of playing in the Nou Camp. The midfield pair of Fabinho and Adam Lallana have been carrying knocks in recent weeks and should be available.
Liverpool Predicted Team
Allison; Robertson, Van Dijk, Matip, Alexander-Arnold; Fabinho, Henderson, Keita; Mane, Firmino, Salah
It certainly promises to be a fascinating battle as two giants of the European game face off in the Champions League semi-final first leg. As ever, you can follow all the action with beIN SPORTS.
