Barca seal Cancelo return to bolster defence

  • Barcelona have signed defender Joao Cancelo on a free transfer, the Spanish champions announced on Thursday.

"The full-back arrives as a free agent and signs on until June 30, 2029," said Barca in a statement.

Portugal international Cancelo terminated his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal to seal a return to Camp Nou.

The 32-year-old has previously had two loan spells with Barca, including during the second half of last season, when he helped Hansi Flick's side retain the La Liga title.

Cancelo played in Portugal, Spain and Italy before signing for Manchester City in 2019.

The defender spent time on loan at Bayern Munich and then Barcelona during the 2023/24 campaign before making the move to Al Hilal in 2024.

Cancelo joins Rodri, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi among Barca's summer arrivals, with the Catalan giants still seeking a striker following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.

Barca had hoped to sign Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez but are now considering other options after the Rojiblancos refused to allow the Argentina international to leave.

Flick's side begin their La Liga campaign away to Elche on Sunday.
