Yamal's destiny: Teen prodigy aims for history in first World Cup final
Spain faces Argentina in the World Cup final, with 19-year-old Lamine Yamal aiming to cement his legacy in his first tournament appearance. Spain’s clinical, possession-based system has driven their campaign, setting up a clash against the reigning champions.
Spain’s La Roja aim for a second title by overcoming the reigning champions. At the center of the drama is 19-year-old prodigy Lamine Yamal, who is set to play in his first World Cup tournament and final.
Following a decisive semi-final victory, the Spanish team, led by coach Luis de la Fuente, brings a highly disciplined and technical approach to the final showdown.
The 19-year-old Barcelona winger who was the star of Spain's European Championship-winning campaign in Germany two years ago, has not been at his electrifying best in this tournament as he works his way back from a hamstring injury.
Spain's charismatic manager de la Fuente meanwhile will be facing a personal duel against a former student in Argentine counterpart, Lionl Scaloni.
De la Fuente, 65, who took over as Spain coach in 2022 after a successful stint as youth team manager, mentored Scaloni when the Argentina coach was studying for his professional license in 2018.
Scaloni, 48, who has strong personal and professional ties to Spain, where he lives, said he will put his friendship with de la Fuente on pause for Sunday's final.
"He was my mentor, and he taught me everything I know and now we are facing each other in a final," Scaloni said.
"Everyone knows I live in Spain and have Spanish family. And I'm very, very sorry, but on Sunday I'm going to try to beat him."
