Netherlands top Group F after victory over Tunisia
The Netherlands secured top spot in Group F and booked their place in the Round of 32 with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Tunisia in Kansas City.
Ronald Koeman's side raced into an early two-goal lead thanks to a disastrous start from Tunisia. Ellyes Skhiri inadvertently turned Denzel Dumfries' cross into his own net after just three minutes before Brian Brobbey doubled the advantage four minutes later, finishing emphatically after Virgil van Dijk headed Tijjani Reijnders' free-kick back across goal.
The Dutch controlled proceedings throughout the opening half and rarely looked troubled, with Tunisia struggling to recover from their nightmare opening.
Tunisia briefly threatened a comeback nine minutes after the restart when Hazem Mastouri headed home from Hannibal Mejbri's corner to reduce the deficit.
Any hopes of a fightback were quickly extinguished, however, as Jan Paul van Hecke restored the Netherlands' two-goal cushion just after the hour mark, powering home a header from another Reijnders set-piece that took a slight deflection on its way into the net.
The victory sees the Netherlands finish on seven points, edging Japan to first place in Group F after the Samurai Blue were held to a 1-1 draw by Sweden. Koeman's side will now face Morocco in the Round of 32 in Monterrey on Monday.
Sweden also progressed to the knockout stage as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.
There had been concerns before kick-off after a lightning storm threatened to delay proceedings in Kansas City, but the match began as scheduled.
Tunisia had the first opening of the contest when Ismaël Gharbi fired over from close range, yet that proved little more than a fleeting warning before the Dutch seized complete control.
It brings a disappointing end to Tunisia's campaign, with the North Africans conceding 12 goals across their three group matches despite arriving at the tournament having progressed through qualifying without conceding once.
Veteran coach Herve Renard, appointed last week following Sabri Lamouchi's departure, was unable to halt the slide as Tunisia exited the World Cup without a point.
