A FIFA official accused of taking bribes will be extradited to Uruguay, not the United States, should the US agree, Switzerland's Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) has confirmed.

Eugenio Figueredo, the former vice-president of CONMEBOL, was one of a seven FIFA officials to be arrested in Zurich in May.

Figueredo, 83, is accused of accepting bribes from a marketing firm in his native Uruguay in connection with the sale of TV rights for the 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2023 Copa America finals.

An FOJ statement released on Wednesday read: "It will be for the US authorities to state whether or not they agree to Uruguay being given priority.

"If the US authorities do not agree, the issue will be decided by the FOJ. The FOJ had previously approved Figueredo's extradition to the USA on 17 September 2015. The former soccer official then lodged an appeal against the ruling with the Federal Criminal Court.

"In common with their US counterparts, the Uruguayan criminal prosecution authorities suspect Figueredo of having abused his office for personal gain."

Figueredo has lodged an appeal against his extradition to the US.
