Nibali disqualified from Vuelta
Astana team leader Vincenzo Nibali will play no further part in the Vuelta a Espana after being disqualified following stage two on Sunday.
Former Vuelta a Espana champion Vincenzo Nibali will not claim his second title in 2015 after being disqualified following an incident during stage two.
The Astana rider – who won the Vuelta in 2010 – was ejected from this year's race after being caught on camera holding onto his team car following a crash on the 158.7-kilometre stage from Alhaurin de la Torre to Caminito del Rey.
Nibali had fallen in the final 30 kilometres of Sunday's route and was plotting his way back to the peloton when the infringement took place, the Italian excluded along with sporting director Alexandre Shefer.
"The film is very clear, it shows that Nibali put his hand on the car for 100 metres," head commissaire Bruno Valcic is quoted as saying by Cycling News.
"So the penalty for this is very clear. The decision of the commissaires is very clear, Vincenzo Nibali has been disqualified from the race.
"I can only say that it was a very tough decision for the commissaires panel but looking at the pictures it was very clear. There was no opportunity to give any other penalty to the rider.
"We waited until now to announce the decision because it was not possible at the finish to see certain films and videos."
