Sangakkara announces retirement date
Kumar Sangakkara will retire from all forms of international cricket following the second Test of Sri Lanka's upcoming series with India.
Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara has announced he will retire from all forms of international cricket following the second Test of his country's upcoming series with India.
Sangakkara, one of the finest run-scorers of the modern era who boasts an average of 58 in Tests, played his final one-day international at this year's World Cup but opted to extend his Test career.
The 37-year-old is currently participating in a three-match series with Pakistan, but has now confirmed he will bow out after the second Test of the rubber against India later this year.
Including the ongoing five-day game against Pakistan in Colombo, Sangakkara has played in 132 Tests, 404 ODIs and 56 Twenty20 internationals.
He boasts 63 international hundreds and has proven a hugely reliable and elegant presence in Sri Lanka's batting order, as well as an adept performer behind the stumps, since making his debut in 2000.
Sangakkara's tally of 12,305 Test runs puts him fifth on the all-time list, while Sachin Tendulkar is the only man to have surpassed his total of 14,234 in ODIs.
