University of Tokyo's baseball team snap 94-match losing streak
Nearing a 100-match losing streak, the University of Tokyo's baseball team finally found a winning formula.
The University of Tokyo's baseball team snapped a 94-match losing streak on Saturday, posting a momentous 6-4 victory over Hosei University.
Also known as Todai, the University of Tokyo posted its first win on a baseball field since October 2, 2010 - needing extra innings to finally experience that winning feeling again.
"I'm honestly delighted," manager Kazushi Hamada told reporters.
"We've finally made it out of the tunnel. I thought we could pull it out. When the pitchers struggled the fielders made plays.
"We've started to look like a team."
Todai is Japan's most prestigious college - its alumni including many of the country's top politicians, lawyers, and doctors - but the school does not offer athletic scholarships.
The school has never finished in the top half of Tokyo's Big 6 Baseball League standings, but hired former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Masumi Kuwata in 2013 in an attempt to turn the tide.
Hajime Kusuda, a second-year science major, drove in the winning run in Saturday's triumph at Jingu Stadium.
