Athletics has been rocked by doping revelations which have tarnished the reputation of the sport.

Here we look at how the scandal has unfolded following the publication of the second part of a report published by an independent commission established by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on Thursday.

December 3, 2014 - A documentary screened by German broadcaster ARD titled "Secret doping dossier: How Russia produces its winner" makes accusations against Russia of cover-ups at national and international level.

December 16, 2014 - It is announced that former WADA president Dick Pound will chair a panel which will investigate the allegations made in the ARD documentary.

January 23, 2015 - Russian athletics head coach Valentin Maslakov offers to resign just a few days after Olympic walking champions Olga Kaniskina, Valery Borchin, Sergei Kirdyapkin are suspended for doping along with Russia's 2011 world champion Sergei Bakulin and silver medallist Vladimir Kanaykin.

August 2, 2015 - The Sunday Times and ARD claim a third of medals, 55 of which were gold, won in endurance events at Olympics and World Championships between 2001 and 2012 were won by athletes who recorded suspicious tests.

August 7, 2015 - Russian long-distance runner Liliya Shobukhova is stripped of her 2010 London marathon title and three Chicago marathon titles after the IAAF said her results from 2009 onwards would be annulled after she was banned for doping in July 2014.

August 19, 2015 - Sebastian Coe is elected as successor to Lamine Diack as IAAF president

November 5, 2015 - Diack is placed under investigation by French authorities amid allegations that Russian athletes were protected after failing drugs tests.

November 9, 2015 - The independent commission established by WADA publish the first part of their report, which recommends the suspension of the All-Russia Athletics Federation (ARAF) and alleges "corruption and bribery" at the highest levels of international athletics.

November 10, 2015 - WADA suspend accreditation for the Moscow Anti-Doping Centre.

November 13, 2015 - The IAAF provisionally suspends the ARAF as an IAAF member with immediate effect. Russia accept a full suspension later in the month.

November 18, 2015 - The Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) are declared "non-compliant" with international sport's anti-doping code with immediate effect. Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Israel and Ukraine are also deemed "non-compliant", while Belgium, France, Greece, Mexico, Spain and Brazil are placed on a "watch list".

December 10, 2015 - RUSADA director general Ramil Khabriev resigns as a WADA delegation arrives to help implement anti-doping measures.

January 8, 2016 - Former president Diack's son, Papa Massata Diack, is one of three senior figures given life bans from athletics after being charged with multiple breaches of anti-doping rules relating to shame distance runner Shobukhova.

January 14, 1016 - The second part of the report from the independent commission said the IAAF must have known about the extent of doping in athletics and concluded that corruption is "imbedded" in the governing body. Lamine Diack in particular is accused of being "responsible for organising and enabling the conspiracy and corruption that took place in the IAAF".
