Gatlin, De Grasse and Powell upstaged by Simbine
Akani Simbine outshone esteemed company in the first meet of the Diamond League season, while Elaine Thompson got one up on Dafne Schippers.
Justin Gatlin, Andre De Grasse and Asafa Powell were upstaged on the opening day of the Diamond League with Akani Simbine winning the men's 100 metres in Doha.
South African Simbine, who has been more active than his rivals this season, was the only sprinter to dip below 10 seconds at 9.99 against a headwind as he kicked off his campaign with the maximum eight points.
Reigning champion Powell came in second with a season's best 10.08, while Gatlin and De Grasse – silver and bronze medallists at Rio 2016 respectively – finished behind Femi Ogunode.
"I'm happy with my shape now, just to come up here and set a motivation for the rest of the season is what I was hoping for," said Simbine.
Elaine Thompson was a double gold medallist in Brazil and she continued her dominance by beating rival Dafne Schippers for victory in the women's 200m.
Kendra Harrison produced a routine performance for eight points in winning the women's 100m hurdles and Caster Semenya impressed to triumph in the women's 800m with a time of one minute, 56.61secs as Genzebe Dibaba – the former 1500m world record holder making her debut in the event – finished fifth.
Ronald Kwemoi produced a world leading time of seven minutes, 28.73secs to snatch glory in the men's 3000m, while Hyvin Kiyeng overtook world record holder Ruth Jebet on the final bend to win the women's 3000m steeplechase.
The home fans went wild when Qatari Mutaz Essa Barshim won the men's high jump with a world leading 2.36m and Olympic champion Thomas Rohler dominated the men's javelin, his effort of 93.90m the second longest in history.
