United States to play first-ever friendly with Puerto Rico in Copa tune up
The United States national team will face off against the island commonwealth for the first time in its history in May.
The United States national team will play Puerto Rico in an international friendly May 22, U.S. Soccer announced Thursday.
This first-ever meeting between the U.S. and the United States’ commonwealth will take place in Bayamon, Puerto Rico at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium at 12 p.m. ET.
“We are thrilled to be playing Puerto Rico in our first preparation game for the Copa America Centenario,” U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann told ussoccer.com. “This will be an important opportunity for our players to stay sharp and keep progressing towards our opener against Colombia, and we appreciate all the efforts by the Puerto Rican Football Federation to help organize the match.”
The friendly is set to be the first of three matches the U.S. will play in the run up to the Copa America Centenario. The squad returns home to face Ecuador in Frisco, Texas on May 25 and then finishes up its Copa prep on May 28 in Kansas City, Kansas against Bolivia.
The U.S. training camp begins May 16 with the final roster for the tournament due by May 20.
The tournament gets underway June 3, with the U.S. playing Colombia in Santa Clara, California.
