The top 10 remaining matches of the MLS season
New York City FC travels to face the LA Galaxy this weekend in a marquee affair, but it is just one of several high-profile matches left this season.
When New York City FC takes the field at StubHub Center on Sunday against the LA Galaxy, the match will feature a collection of stars like none we've seen in MLS before. Assuming Frank Lampard can play (a big assumption these days given his injury woes), we could be treated to a clash with Lampard, David Villa and Andrea Pirlo against a Galaxy cast of stars featuring Giovani dos Santos, Steven Gerrard and reigning MLS MVP Robbie Keane.
It will be a showcase event for the casual fan, but also an important one for Galaxy and NYCFC supporters because the match matters to both. The Galaxy are trying to hold onto first place in the Western Conference, while NYCFC is trying hard to climb into playoff position in its inaugural season.
Combine everything, and Galaxy-NYCFC will have more buzz than perhaps any match this regular season. While that may be, the match is far from being the most important of the remaining games this regular season.
In fact, you can look through the MLS schedule and find a dozen or more matches that carry more significance, if not more star power.
With that in mind, here are 10 remaining regular season MLS matches you will want to circle on your calendar:
MONTREAL IMPACT at TORONTO FC, Aug. 29
With Didier Drogba now leading the line for the Impact, Montreal will be seen as a strong candidate to make the playoffs, and even potentially make a deep run. One of the teams they will be competing with for a playoff place is rival Toronto FC, which is looking to reach the postseason for the first time in club history. The Impact defense has shown vast improvement, but will have the tough task of trying to stop MVP candidate Sebastian Giovinco and newly-acquired Herculez Gomez.
PORTLAND TIMBERS at SEATTLE SOUNDERS, Aug. 30
The Sounders are primed for a surge after the return of Obafemi Martins from injury and an impressive infusion of talent from the summer transfer market. They will take on arch-rival Portland, which has quietly put together a strong season and will be looking to showcase $5 million designated player signing Lucas Melano. Both teams will be jockeying for a top-three place in the West, and a win for either in this clash at CenturyLink Field will go a long way toward that goal.
D.C. UNITED at NEW YORK RED BULLS, Aug. 30
The battle for first place in the Eastern Conference is far from decided, and a win at home by the Red Bulls against their rival would make things extremely tight atop the East. The Red Bulls are riding a strong run of form, with a 7-1-1 record in their past nine. They face a D.C. side that has had its ups and downs in the middle part of the season, and has posted a 3-3-0 mark in its past six. With three games in hand, the Red Bulls are in prime position to bypass DCU, but any chance of doing that has to start with a win at Red Bull Arena.
TORONTO FC at NEW YORK CITY FC, Sept. 16
The last time these teams met at Yankee Stadium they combined for eight goals in a shootout for the ages. The next meeting could feature significantly more star power if Andrea Pirlo and Frank Lampard are available. Former Juventus teammates Pirlo and Giovinco will renew acquaintances, while both Giovinco and Villa lick their lips at the possibility of another goal-fest.
SEATTLE SOUNDERS at VANCOUVER WHITECAPS, Sept. 19
These Cascadia rivals have had some memorable meetings through the years, and this season has been no different. This match will have plenty of playoff and Supporters' Shield implications, and it also comes just a few days before they square off in CONCACAF Champions League play.
SEATTLE SOUNDERS at SPORTING KANSAS CITY, Sept. 27
With just one goal scored in two matches, these West foes have played a pair of hard-fought clashes this season. The pressure for playoff places will be mounting by late September, though, so this one could be a classic. Sporting KC striker Dom Dwyer will have his hands full dealing with Sounders center back partners Chad Marshall and Roman Torres, while Obafemi Martins looks to ensure Sporting KC doesn't post a third shutout on the Sounders this season.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY at PORTLAND TIMBERS, Oct. 3
This will mark the second meeting in a month between these West foes and Peter Vermes won't find it easy taking his team to Providence Park. A potential battle between Roger Espinoza and Diego Valeri will be worth the price of admission, as will the Timbers tandem of Diego Chara and Will Johnson trying to contain Benny Feilhaber.
LA GALAXY at SEATTLE SOUNDERS, Oct. 4
The two most stacked teams in the league square off for the final time this season. The Galaxy won the two previous meetings this year, but the Sounders weren't close to full strength for either loss. Both teams revamped their rosters in the summer, and this meeting will offer up an appetizer of what we're likely to see come playoff time. Can Osvaldo Alonso get healthy and shackle Giovani dos Santos? Can Roman Torres help Seattle's defense contain Robbie Keane? Can Clint Dempsey help the Sounders leapfrog the Galaxy in the standings? This could wind up being the game of the year.
TORONTO FC at MONTREAL IMPACT, Oct. 25
The final weekend of the regular season sees TFC head to Stade Saputo, where the Canadian rivals could be playing for a place in the playoffs. Toronto has never made the postseason before, and with a very tough schedule down the stretch, Greg Vanney's side could very well need points against the Impact to reach the playoffs.
LA GALAXY at SPORTING KANSAS CITY, Oct. 25
The Galaxy travel to the midwest, where they could be playing for a Supporters' Shield and the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Sporting Park is normally a very difficult place to play, but San Jose's recent 5-0 thrashing of Sporting KC suggests there may be vulnerability present when this regular season finale kicks off.
