Chivas defeat Leon to win Copa MX
The Guadalajara side broke a nearly decade-long trophy drought by topping Leon in Wednesday's cup final.
Nearly a decade after winning the 2006 Apertura, one of Mexico's most storied clubs is again lifting a trophy.
Chivas de Guadalajara topped Leon 1-0 Wednesday to win the Apertura's Copa MX and break a nine-year trophy drought.
The match was scoreless until the 71st minute when center back Oswaldo Alanis headed a ball from a set piece past American goalkeeper William Yarbrough. The Guanajuato side couldn't draw level, and Chivas lifted the trophy in Leon's Camp Nou.
Chivas made the final of the Copa MX last tournament but fell to Puebla. Manager Matias Almeyda's side now faces the winner of the Clausura edition of Copa MX next summer for a spot at the 2017 Copa Libertadores.
The team's goalkeeper in the match, Rodolfo Cota, lifts Copa MX for the second time in as many tries after winning it with Puebla last time around.
Chivas lost just once during its cup campaign, topping Group 4, then beating Veracruz in a quarterfinal shootout and Toluca in the semifinal before Wednesday's final victory.
Copa MX started in 1907 but wasn't contested from 1997 on until it was revived in the 2012 Apertura. Chivas lifted the Copa Mexico in 1962-63 and 1969-70.
