Beat-ing Feuz proves impossible in St Moritz
St Moritz crowned a home downhill champion as Beat Feuz claimed Alpine Ski World Championship gold in the blue riband event.
Beat Feuz produced a stunning attacking display on home snow to secure victory in the Alpine Ski World Championships downhill on Sunday.
The Swiss racer snatched victory by 0.12 seconds in the main event of this year's championships as he turned 2015 bronze into 2017 gold, much to the delight of the home crowd.
Feuz opened up a four-tenths advantage after the fourth split on his run and that was enough to secure the title, with Erik Guay so close to completing a downhill and super-G double for Canada.
Guay had to settle for silver, though, as he lost crucial time in the penultimate sector, the 35-year-old having been green in the first four intermediates.
Austria's Max Franz completed the podium places with an equally impressive display, he too losing ground late on as Feuz's time of one minute, 38.91secs proved impossible to beat.
After fog caused the postponement of the race on Saturday the conditions were marginally better 24 hours later, although the early runners still suffered with reduced visibility at the top.
The lead changed hands on a regular basis and it looked as though the gold would be shared as defending champion Patrick Kung equalled Kjetil Jansrud's time of 1:39.30secs.
However, the pair had to settle for a share of fourth as Feuz, Guay and Franz benefited from improving conditions.
Olympic champion Matthias Mayer's hopes of adding the world title to his record looked promising after a strong start but he lost too much time in the jump sections and came home eight tenths back.
That left Feuz celebrating a 13th world downhill title for Switzerland, moving them to within four of record holders Austria.
