After his early exit in Madrid, Australian No.1 De Minaur was looking for a lift ahead of the French Open, but he didn't get it and made a second straight first match exit for the first time in three years, smashing his racquet along the way.
That moment of frustration came in the third set after Arnaldi levelled things up at 4-4 before breaking De Minaur to love to give himself the opportunity to serve for the match, an opportunity he didn't pass up much to the delight of the partisan crowd.
Arnaldi will play Rafael Jodar next up, the man that dumped De Minaur out in Madrid.
De Minaur, the world No.8, has now lost four of his past five matches on clay and will be keen to avoid a poor showing at the French Open.
