French Open: Anisimova downs Rakotomanga Rajaonah on return from injury
Amanda Anisimova's French Open preparations were restricted due to a wrist injury, but she advanced to the second round in straight sets.
Amanda Anisimova overcame some signs of rust in her first outing since the Miami Open, defeating Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah 6-3 6-1 in the first round of the French Open.
A wrist injury denied Anisimova the chance to prepare for the year's second grand slam by participating in the European clay-court swing, but she rolled to victory in 70 minutes on Monday.
The two-time major finalist eventually took charge with her superior power, but French wildcard Rakotomanga Rajaonah – who is ranked 153rd in the world – initially caused her a few issues.
There were four straight breaks of serve early in the opening set, with each player grabbing two apiece, before Anisimova recovered her composure on serve.
The American broke at the third attempt in game eight, which proved enough to take the first set, and she found things more straightforward in the second.
Anisimova broke in all four of Rakotomanga Rajaonah's service games, with a break conceded in game two proving the most minor of inconveniences as she teed up a second-round clash with Julia Grabher.
Data Debrief: Anisimova shakes off injury woes
Anisimova entered Roland-Garros as the top-10 ranked player with the fewest victories on the WTA Tour this year (11). But her wrist issue did not seem to affect her here.
Since the start of the 2025 French Open, Anisimova has 20 grand slam main-draw victories, a tally only bettered by Aryna Sabalenka (23) and Iga Swiatek (21) in that time among WTA players.
Anisimova now has 15 main-draw wins at Roland-Garros, further improving on her best record at any of the majors.
