Landaluce made a relentless start in Rome, converting both of his break point opportunities on his way to a 5-0 lead, before clinching the first set with his only set point.

After winning 26 of the 38 points in the first, and a rain delay, the 20 year-old found himself in a closer battle in the second as the pair exchanged breaks early on.

There were then three consecutive breaks of serve at the end of the second set, with two going in favour of Medvedev as the seventh seed forced a decider.

Landaluce made early inroads, breaking Medvedev's serve to start the third set, but the Russian, who had been 2-3 down before a stunning backhand return winner pulled him back into the match, responded with a break of his own in the sixth game.

The Spaniard saved three break points in the eighth, before Medvedev squandered three match points as the quarter-final headed for a tiebreak.

But Medvedev was able to avoid that scenario; after fending off a break point to take a 6-5 lead, Medvedev clinched victory with a break to love.
