Tielemans warns Belgium of complacency against Kazakhstan
Youri Tielemans warned Belgium against complacency ahead of its crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan in Group J.
The Red Devils sit top of the group with 14 points after their opening six matches, one ahead of second-placed North Macedonia, which has played one more game.
Rudi Garcia's side will secure its place in next year's FIFA World Cup finals with victory in Astana on Sunday (AEDT).
Kazakhstan, which has seven points from as many games, cannot finish in the top two, and was beaten 6-0 by Belgium when the sides met in September.
But Tielemans insists his team-mates cannot take their opponents – under the caretaker stewardship of Talgat Baysufinov after Stanislav Cherchesov's departure – for granted.
"Everyone expects us to win here comfortably, but that's not how football works any more," the midfielder said.
"Kazakhstan also have a new coach and might play differently. We have to adapt. We have no excuses within the squad. We just want to win here."
Even if Belgium fails to secure qualification from thsi match, it will have another chance to do so against bottom side Liechtenstein in Liege three days later. However, coach Garcia wants it sealed as soon as possible.
"It's certainly a topic of conversation within the group [qualification]. A [FIFA] World Cup is quite an experience," he added.
"Hopefully, we'll get the job done [on Sunday AEDT], and then we can talk about it even more. Not playing at 100 per cent would be a mistake, because I don't want to wait until Tuesday [Wednesday AEDT] to qualify."
