Bompastor fumes after Twente draw
Chelsea opened their 2025-26 Champions League campaign with a disappointing draw to Twente, leaving Sonia Bompastor wanting more.
Sonia Bompastor conceded that Chelsea's draw with Twente in the Women's Champions League opener was "not a good result at all".
Bompastor watched on as Sandy Baltimore's second-half penalty salvaged a point at De Grolsch Veste after Danique van Ginkel's stunner had given Twente a 63rd-minute lead.
The Blues generated several chances during the encounter, with Sjoeke Nusken, Aggie Beever-Jones and Alyssa Thompson all testing Diede Lemey during the first half.
Thompson then had a goal disallowed for offside shortly after the restart, but even with the introduction of Sam Kerr, Chelsea were unable to get going in the final third.
The result means Chelsea have now failed to win their last three games in the Champions League, having lost both legs in last year's semi-final to Barcelona.
Chelsea last had a longer winless run in the competition between March 2023 and November 2024, when they failed to win four matches in the Champions League.
"It's not a good result at all," said Bompastor. "We wanted to start the campaign with three points. Tonight, out of possession, I am quite happy even if we conceded a goal.
"In possession, when you play this goal you need to show more desire. We created a lot of opportunities and couldn't score more than one.
"We had multiple situations in the box, and we had 18 crosses. Only six times were we first on the ball. This is not enough when you play a Champions League game."
Bompastor's frustration is backed up by the metrics, with Chelsea generating an expected goals (xG) total of 3.02 from their 20 shots, though only six of those were on target.
It is now back-to-back stalemates for the Blues following their 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the Women's Super League last weekend, with London rivals Tottenham up next in the league.
Chelsea could equal the second-longest unbeaten run in WSL history if they avoid defeat to Spurs on Sunday, though Bompastor insisted that her players must learn lessons from this match before their clash at Kingsmeadow.
"I told my players after the game a bad result is tough right now, but we need to stay together and take some learnings from that," Bompastor added.
"That's the only thing we can do, stay together and find solutions. We want to be an aggressive team, we want to play a high block.
"I don't think Twente created a lot but once is enough for them to score.
"We took risks in our game but I think that is the right thing to do. we should be dominant more than what we showed."
